Thomas J. Pingel is an Associate Professor of Geographic Information Science in the Department of Geography at Virginia Tech. Dr. Pingel holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, received his Masters and Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was an Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellow from 2010-12. His research focuses on lidar and photogrammetric point cloud processing and visualization for applications in urban planning, navigation, and archaeology, with a secondary focus on the application of interactive web maps and augmented reality to geographic education. His publications have appeared in CaGIS, Computers and Geosciences, Cartographica, Cartographic Perspectives, and the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Dr. Pingel was chair of the Association of American Geographers Cartography Specialty Group from 2013-15, and has served as a Cartographic Editor for the Journal of Maps since 2014. In addition to being a member of the Cartographic and Geographic Information Society, Dr. Pingel is an active member of the AAG, the International Cartographic Association on Cognitive Visualization, the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the National Council for Geographic Education.
