Benefits of a CaGIS Membership

The Cartography and Geographic Information Society supports research, education and practice to improve the understanding, creation, analysis, and use of maps and geographic information to support effective decision-making and improve the quality of life. The benefits of membership include:

CaGIS Journal: Members receive access to the Cartography and Geographic Information Science (CaGIS) Journal. Our flagship publication, the CaGIS Journal serves as a forum for the exchange of original concepts, techniques, approaches, and experiences by those who design, implement, and use geospatial technologies. Log in to access the journal online.

CaGIS Conference: The CaGIS Conference is held every two years to bring together from around the world researchers and scientists who are working at the intersection of cartography and GIScience. A continuation of the highly successful AutoCarto conference series, the first CaGIS Conference was held in 2024 in conjunction with the annual UCGIS Symposium.

USNC-ICA: The U.S. National Committee (USNC) for the International Cartographic Association (ICA), a standing committee of CaGIS, acts as the liaison between ICA and CaGIS as well as the larger U.S. cartographic community. The USNC supports U.S. participation in the ICC by administering the International Travel Grants, organizing U.S. entries in the International Cartographic Exhibition and Children’s Map Competition at the ICC, and submitting the National Report (every four years).

International Conference Grants: CaGIS supports early and non-early career scholars to present their research at the ICC. The US National Committee coordinates award of National Science Foundation funding for early career scholars to attend the ICC and non-early career scholars are eligible to receive the CaGIS International Conference Grant to attend the ICC.  The Society also supports student travel to the CaGIS Conference. Opportunities for travel funding are posted on the conference web pages when they become available.

Awards and Scholarships: CaGIS sponsors a number of student awards, including the Student Map Design Competition, the CaGIS Journal Student Paper Award and the CaGIS Scholarship. In addition we honor our more experienced colleagues through the Professional Map Design Competition (now in its 35th year!), the Fennel Award, the ACSM Fellows Award, and the Distinguished Career Award. Most recently, CaGIS has initiated the CaGIS Rising award to support research or outreach projects that have the potential to transform global challenges into new opportunities that advance and promote Cartography and GIScience.

Advocacy and Professional Representation

CaGIS participates in a number of activities that influence both legislation and policy at the national level. CaGIS is a member of the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO). The National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC) is an advisory body to the Federal Geographic Data Committee. CaGIS also monitors other issues related to Cartography and Geographic Science at the national, regional, and local levels and is proactive in seeking and representing members’ concerns. Your issues are our issues!
