Terms of Membership

 Membership Eligibility and Rights

A Full Member has voting rights and is any person who:

Possesses a bachelorʹs or higher degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline or area of study which would qualify the person for a professional position in cartography, geographic information sciences or related activities, including but not limited to, compilation and research, execution and production, teaching, interpretation, dissemination and preservation; or

Has four years of active experience in cartography, geographic information sciences or related activities, as described above, or Possesses a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university and has an interest in cartography or geographic information sciences.

An Early Career Member is any person who has completed his or her degree within the last two years and was a Student Member for two years prior to completion of the degree. An Early Career Member has voting rights.

A Lifetime Member shall be any person who applies to the Society for such designation and has been a Full Member for one (1) or more years.

A Student Member is any person pursuing a course of study as a graduate or undergraduate student on a full‐time basis (as defined by the academic institution) leading to a career in cartography, geographic information sciences or related field. A Student Member shall not have voting rights.

An Affiliate Member is any person who does not participate directly in any of CaGIS’ disciplines, yet has an interest in cartography and GIS, and wishes to support the mission and goals of CaGIS. An Affiliate Member shall have all the rights and privileges of membership, except for the right to vote and to hold CaGIS office.

An Organizational Member is any organization (private sector firm, government agency, academic institution, etc.) who provides sustaining support to CaGIS, and supports the mission and goals of CaGIS. See documentation below for organizational member criteria and benefits.

An Organizational Member is any organization (private sector firm, government agency, academic institution, etc.) who provides sustaining support to CaGIS, and supports the mission and goals of CaGIS. This membership category will provide the Organizational Member with:

LARGE ORGANIZATION (11 or more employees)

  • Five (5) free Full memberships for employees and a discounted rate of $100 for each additional Full member.
  • Free Annual Conference pre-attendee list.
  • Free Annual Conference post-attendee list.
  • Link to your organization on the CaGIS homepage.



SMALL ORGANIZATION (10 or fewer employees)

  • Two (2) free Full memberships for employees and a discounted rate of $100 for each additional Full member.
  • Link to your organization on the CaGIS homepage
