International Cartographic Exhibition

USNC FundingInternational Cartographic Exhibition | Children’s Map Competition | U.S. National ReportUSNC Members

The U.S. National Committee (USNC) for the International Cartographic Association (ICA – www.icaci.org) organizes the entry of maps and other cartographic products for the United States in the International Cartographic Exhibition (ICE) which is held in conjunction with the International Cartographic Conference (ICC –https://icaci.org/icc/). This call for participation is open to all U.S. map makers and others to submit their cartographic products, including paper maps and charts, atlases, digital products, digital services, educational cartographic products, and other cartographic products (including globes and tactile maps). All submitted products must have been produced or modified after July 2019 (the date of the last ICC). Submissions will be displayed in the ICE and in the online Exhibition Catalogue (which will remain accessible via a link at the ICA website for two years after the Exhibition date). All submitted products will be judged by a cartographic jury during the ICE, and winners will be announced at the close of the conference.

Please send notification of your intent to submit an entry or entries in the ICE to the USNC Chair by June 20, 2021. For each entry, include:

  • The category for the entry (see this web page for details)
  • The approximate size of the entry
  • Name and email of the person submitting the entry

Final products, full details about the entries, and thumbnail images of the entries should be sent to the USNC Chair by September 15, 2021.

Deadlines
  • June 20, 2021: Notification to the USNC Chair of intent to submit entries in the ICE
  • September 15, 2021: Submission of materials to the USNC Chair
  • To Be Announced: Access to the online catalogue of 2021 International Cartographic Exhibition

2021 ICE Submission Guidelines

Submissions are welcome in the following categories.

Maps on Panels

This category includes not only paper maps, but also all non-paper cartographic products suitable for poster board display, such as relief models or tactile cartography.

Charts on Panels

This category includes not only paper nautical and aeronautical charts, but also all non-paper navigational products suitable for poster board display.

Atlases

This category is for all non-digital atlas products, whether composed of maps or charts. Atlases will be displayed on shelves, tables, and kiosks in a special area of the Exhibition.

Educational Cartographic Products

This category includes both digital and non-digital educational cartographic products. These products will be exhibited on shelves,
tables, and kiosks in a special area of the Exhibition.

Digital Products

This category is for all digital cartographic products except for on-line (web-based) digital cartographic products and services that may also include Spatial Data Infrastructures (Digital Services), whether composed of maps or charts. Digital products will be accessible to visitors in a special digital product area of the Exhibition. For details about this category, see Special Instructions for Digital Cartographic Products below.

Other Cartographic Products

This category is for all products unsuitable for vertical panel display, or which otherwise do not fit into the previous categories,
including globes and tactile maps. These products will be exhibited on shelves, tables, and kiosks in a special area of the
Exhibition.

Digital Services

This category is for exhibition of on-line (web-based) digital cartographic products and services only that may also include Spatial
Data Infrastructures (SDIs) established by an institution or a group of institutions that represents collective efforts
to make geospatial information discovery, access, and use broadly available to the public.

These achievements are not part of the cartographic competition and will not be judged. The LOC will assign a time slot for each
Exhibitor to present their on-line service or SDI to Exhibition visitors. These time slots will be listed in the Exhibition Program.
Each Exhibitor is asked to appoint a Digital Services representative to present their digital service to Exhibition visitors in this
special session.

Materials to Submit

In addition to the cartographic product, each entry must include the following materials.

Abstract

The abstract should state the purpose and content of and the cartographic method applied in the creation of the cartographic product, in very few words. This information will be used to plan the exhibition, prepare the Exhibition Catalogue, and prepare the identification labels to be placed by each product
in the exhibition. The abstract is limited to 100 words in English or French. The Exhibition Organizing Committee will not edit the abstract, so please ensure the description is clear and concise.

Keywords

Please include keywords descriptive of the entry. Each keyword should not contain more than two compound words, and each keyword phrase should start with an uppercase letter. When selecting the keywords, think of them as terms that will help someone locate your chapter at the top of the search engine list using, for example, Google. Very broad terms (e.g., “Case study” by itself) should be avoided as these will result in thousands of search results but will not result in finding your product.

Thumbnail Image

The thumbnail image is picture or screenshot of the product (JPEG or TIFF) with minimum input scanning resolution 300 dpi for full color. These will be included in the digital Exhibition Catalogue. Users will not have access to the original images—images will be viewed within a constrained, protected view-and-pan window which prevents users from obtaining all or portions of the cartographic product.

Create a video of 2−4 minutes in length. This video should describe the product, provide a visual tour of its features and functionality, and if possible, include a URL link at the end for viewers to link to the actual product. An audio component is encouraged although not required. Post this video to a URL which will navigate a viewer directly to your demo video. These URL’s will then be accessible at the Exhibition via YouTube or Vimeo.

Create an A3-size (297 mm x 420 mm) or tabloid size (11″ x 17″) poster for your product. The poster should include the title, author(s), a screenshot, and the video URL. In addition, a QR code pointing to your video URL is highly recommended. These posters should then be saved in PDF format and uploaded, along with their corresponding video URL, by the representative. These posters will be displayed at the special digital cartographic entry area at the Exhibition. Visitors will be able to browse the posters to see which video they would like to view, then either choose your video URL at a computer in the display area, to view in YouTube or Vimeo, or enter the URL directly in their smartphone browser and watch it on their own.
